Background: In 2009 I blew a knee with massive overuse attempting an offroad marathon. It was all soft tissue trauma, so over time it has mostly settled, to the point of being the niggling Auld Injurie.

I've been riding very little lately, and doing a lot of grunty gymstuff; my knees and legs are strong, but not used to being clipped in. Yesterday the bad knee really complained about being clipped in once more.

Looking at the foot when I squat naturally, it is toed-out a little more than the other - say, ten degrees. I think this is a consequence of the Auld Injurie. My Time ATACs aren't really up to that degree of toe-out: while it's within the range of motion, the spring return puts an ouchy torque over an hour or so.

If all I'm doing is cycling, then it doesn't matter: build up the miles and the knee adapts, and I don't need to load a cow on my back in the evening for squats. But my current athletic priority is my powerlifting, and that does matter.

So, as I see it: Swap for clips and straps; man up, it'll adapt; swap to X system; modify my existing shoes/pedals/cleats in a Dremel frenzy.

...hang on, this should be obvious. The fore and aft tabs. Dremel off a small section of the back tab inboard. Right?

...a file has been applied to the cleat tabs. Test ride tomorrow. :)

I was going to suggest road cleats, but your bodge is cheaper. :)

...okay, test Sunday. I feel like I've been in the wrong pub during a derby match: kicked all over. Rest day and yoghurt gingers...

Don't bugger your knee for a stupid ride. You don't HAVE to do the ride! We just want to have you visit.

You'll get me! You might also get me riding. We'll see. Today was hilariously vile -- an audax down here had 10% of signed-up starters finish, the rest did what we did and went to the movies. "Hulk? Smash." :D

I'm adjusting my Planne so that there's the chance of actual bike commuting, so a week or two of 40-mile totals will soon let me know if the knee is going to play or not.

I haven't seen it yet! No spoilers! I'm hoping to go tomorrow - Captain America Blu Ray arrived at the weekend (been too busy/tired to watch it yet) so we'll see that tonight then Avbengers tomorrow.

Hm, that mod works. I have more toe-out before the sprung behaviour starts, so normal riding is torqueless.

A predictable side effect is that clipping out is lighter due to the reduction of tabstuff.

That should also benefit your knee, though.

Aye, it's not so loose it'll pop free, and if I decide to do megamuscle fixie traffic sprints, well, that's my lookout :D

That cleat mod works perfectly. Foot is neutral and under no force, at whatever toe-out angle it likes.
