Standing by the transition area from the swim to bike in Portobello on Sunday I was wondering about the technique of it.

Most people seemed to wait till they were off the sand before stripping off the wetsuit as they ran to the bikes. Some had the shoes on the pedals, others on the floor.

The techniques were very very different, and I couldn't tell if it's just down to luck, or you have people who are better at the transition than others.

One chap in particular was most annoyed when, struggling to get the wetsuit off over his feet, he toppled slightly and knocked his (nice carbon) bike off the stand. The rest of the manouevre was performed with one hand holding the bike and seemed to take an age.

The obvious novices were using the transition to catch their breath and really take their time.

Interesting stuff.

I wonder if there is an approved technique?

Or do people just do what feels most comfortable and works for them?

I'll have to watch some of the local tri events and see what's done there...

The Standard Authorised Technique is:

* Open the back of the suit as you are about to exit the water allowing a lubricating sloosh in. (nobody seems to do this)

* Zip down and shrug the suit off your shoulders to the waist *whilst* running up to transition.

* Pull the suit down over your hips, push the legs down as far as they will go.

* Cartoon chewing-gum treading action to get the feet out.

Falling over, stopping for a fag or riding off in your wettie are all, er, improvisations. The back end of the field (that's where I am) can be a bit of a clown parade! But you've been lying down for a while before transition so the blood's all in funny places. I nearly took a spill at New Forest (a nice marshal gave me a stabilising shove).
