How's the final prep for your test of manliness coming along?

It's a half, so more like Alumunkium. :)

I'm, er, tapering. Which means being stressed and skiving and starting to carb up! Apart from the pies it's all a mind game now. Plenty of cronies will be in attendance so I have to put on a good show...

That saddle turns out to be not so gret aktualy, so I'm trying the bogstandard padded one that came with the Etape today; all a bit close to the bone for saddle woes but there you go. I *must* have a good lower back for the run or I'm banjaxed.

Aiming for 6:00-6:30. No idea what I'll actually get. Don't particularly mind what I get - this excursion into long-distance nonsense isn't going to be repeated. The training for shorter tris is fun. The training for this has been a grind. And since the races are the excuse/punctuation/celebration/benchmark for the training, fun training is more important than el macho.

Banzai!

There was a no-starter. :( The lurg turned to hot-and-cold shakes and a cough and there was no way I was fit to race. So I took lots of photos instead: http://flickr.com/photos/andygates/sets ... 425050188/

There's always next year (as you said to me, after all).

But I know how bad that sucks.

No, this one isn't unfinished business. While I really enjoy the training for sprints and olys, the really long sessions you need to put in for long distances were a chore. Now, that's fine if the point of the training is the race, but for me the point of the race is the training -- it's a checkpoint, goad, playtime, but the purpose of the whole deal is getting my arse off the sofa. So if I don't dig the training, I'm not going to do it again. I don't need to collect the badge. And the training has indicated that I'd loathe ironman training even more, so that one's for the birds.

This is my official "nah, I don't think so" for the Norseman.

Anyway, I've got four solid targets for next season: a sub-1:30 sprint (should be doable), a sub-2:45 olympic (ditto), a sub-2:00 half-marathon (I've got the Great West Run in mind, fancy joining me, Baggy?) and bringing about Ragnarok the Dumb Run in as long as it bloody well takes. Oh, and getting good on the penny. Plenty to be going on with. I'm thinking of a proper season of triathlons, as the long gap between May's oly and September's Middle really let me loose my edge. No more than one a month, but plenty: two olys, three or four sprints, something like that.

I'm disappointed, and I'll beat myself up over my decision, and it's a pain. But you gotta move on.

I've given the T-shirt to the local charity shop (I'll keep the mug though, I need mugs) and just have to peel the number stickers off the bike... :(

Top totty though. :D

Fairy snuff. Sounds like a very sensible decision. Or would you prefer it if someone went into full-on Sgt Major mode and turned their "YEW 'ORRIBLE LITTLE MAN!" up to 11 until you gave in and promised to stop being a snivelling weed?

Eminently so. I managed two of those this year, including the shitefest that was Dalkeith.

Haddington was 1:23 last year. If I can do it, Munky, you can too 8) .

Meh, already done it to myself. I was literally thrashing around in the van (neighbours must have thought I'd got lucky) with the Inner Torment of it all. Especially as I'd gorged on pump-up music on the drive over.

Say that again?

Well, I'm not quite so svelte, but I sure as hell can. I'll worry about which races to do later.

Heh. One thing we were discussing while driving the bike course (recce-tastic): Triathlon is like LARP. You've got the Big Day, the silly costumes, the scurrying from place to place for a quick-change, the gear obsession, and to cap it all, you've got top totty. It's a total win.

It's even better when you're bi.
