Less than one week to go! The nerves are beginning to kick in. I haven’t even sat on my new bike yet, let alone ridden it. I also need to knock up some sort of luggage carrying arrangement. Oh, and book my train ticket from St. Andrews to Dumbarton, and practice pitching my new tent.

I’m a bit nervous about my new bike, too. It’s unbelievably light, and I wonder if it’s going to be twitchy! I’m also going the other way from Will – from a Brooks to a plastic and carbon wedge. I know they warn never to try out new gear on a long ride, but I’m building up a complete catalogue of ‘firsts’ on this ride: New bike, new position, new saddle, new shoes, new pedal system, new top with new integrated hydration system – you get the picture? Still, it’s only 120 miles...

To be honest, guys, I'm not convinced I'm going to be fit for it. I've been signed off walking and driving for three weeks because of my foot and my knee hasn't fully recovered. I haven't made a final decision yet as to whether I can do this or not, but bear in mind I haven't done more than about 40k since last year's Dumb Run and making sure my injuries heal properly has to be a higher priority. So you might have to do it without me :c+sad:

Sam

Sorry to hear that, Sam. Hope you make a speedy recovery. I think it might be wiser not to aggravate your injury, and to rest it. However, you’ll know how you’re feeling. Just don’t try to brave it out if you’re not 100%, and bear in mind that joints can suffer even more if it’s cold and wet.

I was going to suggest you could drive a ‘sag’ wagon come burger van, but if you’ve been advised not to drive, doing so might be even more detrimental than pedalling.

We (may) need a trailer and an armchair and a whip!

Just been thinking – if Sam doesn’t ride, and it sounds like she’d be daft to attempt it, it won’t be a proper Dumb Run without her. Maybe we should think about an alternative. Perhaps we ought to shelve the Dumb Run for this year, but maybe meet up for a shorter day/sight-seeing/tea-shop ride from St Andrews on the Saturday…

Me? Looking for an excuse to wimp out? No!

There's no reason why the rest of you can't do it even if I can't. There will still be beer on the beach afterwards. This year I'll be sure to pack the barbecue.

I can't crack the whip and herd you to the start and force you to ride, the decision's entirely yours. But I'm not going to feel bad if you do it without me -- on the contrary!

Sam (still haven't decided, anyway)

Ah, but if you're up for a bit of a ride (just not an epic) then we might have a Noble Excuse.

You could meet us bright and early at the bridge with coffee and encouragement. ;)

No going back – I’ve bought my train ticket.

Er, is this the place to put in any unusual menu requests?

I’m sorry to say, but I won’t be able to make it. :(

I was cutting things a bit fine anyhow with regard to getting my bike ready, and packing etc, but an urgent and time-consuming job came up yesterday which killed last night, plus three more problems surfaced today, so I’m afraid I can't get any time off.

Oh dear, I’m beginning to feel sorry for myself! :-({|=

You work weekends?

Sorry to hear that, David. there's always next year. The weather's looking strangely positive right now as well.

Has anyone heard from Tom recently?

Sam

Weekends? Fraid so – it’s hard to get a weekend off, and I might only manage around three per year. I can sometimes skive off for a few hours, which is what I was hoping to do yesterday and today, but I ended up having to drop everything and work until 11pm last night. Today and tonight are also going to be fun-filled! Still, I’ll (hopefully) get a few days off at Christmas...

Who’s doing the Dumb Run now? Is it likely to be just Will and Andy?

Last night, when I realised I wouldn’t be able to ride I did wonder if I might be able to drive down and do some support driving and feeding, but I’m afraid it looks like I won’t even be able to do that.

Wow. What do you do (unless telling me means you'll have to kill me)?

If it's just Munky and Will I suspect there might be a wholesale decision to postpone or cancel this year in favour of a different ride, especially as Will is working on Saturday. If we leave it until Sunday during daylight hours Frood might be persuaded and I can definitely do some riding, just not sure how much. I was going to test the foot this evening and if it wasn't painful after the test (15 minute run), and still wasn't painful on Saturday, I was probably going to ride.

Haven't heard from Tom, though, so I don't know how many of us there would be even if I did ride.

Sam
